The focal mechanism shows it to be a normal fault earthquake. Where the crust is being pulled apart, “normal faulting” occurs, in which the overlying (hanging-wall) block moves down with respect to the lower (foot wall) block.

Current depth and location estimates of this event place it below the interface between the subducting Pacific plate and overriding Australian plate. Maximum peak ground acceleration recorded by GeoNet instruments is about one quarter of the acceleration due to gravity (0.26 g). This measurement was recorded in Woodville. Relatively strong shaking was also recorded on the Kapiti Coast (e.g. up to 0.2 g in Paraparaumu) whereas accelerations recorded in Wellington city were less than 0.05 g. In comparison, ground motions recorded in Wellington during the recent Cook Strait earthquakes ranged up to 0.26g.

damage

The quake caused power cuts to 5600 customers on its electricity network, affecting customers in and around Eketahuna, Alfredton, Palmerston North, Feilding and as far north as Manaia in Taranaki. About 1600 were still without power by 7pm. Some cellphone coverage has also been affected.
3 people in Palmerston North have been taken to hospital after chemicals were knocked from shelves.
A large cliff slip near Mangaweka caused the Rangitikei River to change colour.
The jolt loosened a 20 ton chunk of rock from the 162m high Castle Rock at Castlepoint, killing 9 seals.
In Masterton, the 1925 Daniell’s building on Queen St had been evacuated and two other older buildings appeared to be damaged.
The quake was felt widely in Wellington. Hundreds of shoppers in Lower Hutt’s Queensgate Mall left the complex following the tremor, which left people screaming and ducking for cover as items fell from shelves.

3 day graphs

Preliminary data showed an initial gap of 2hrs and 40 minutes between the Mainshock and the first aftershock, on review this gap has been filled. The first aftershock was a 4.0188ML quake 3 minutes 46 seconds after the Mainshock 8.8km to the south west of the main shock, south west of Alfredton, on the east side of the Pa Valley Fault
At this point the differences between preliminary data and reviewed data can be easier seen on a graph.
